Behavioral Health Support and the Rural Health Transformation Fund

July Board Meeting Recap

Behavioral Health Support and the Rural Health Transformation Fund

At the July North Shore Health board meeting, the board and administration discussed several key topics. You can learn more in the recent WTIP article and interview with NSH CEO Kimber Wraalstad.

Wraalstad noted that the recent wildfire smoke brought back memories of early COVID-19 response efforts, prompting staff to again utilize tools such as N95 masks, air scrubbers, and increased attention to respiratory health. While NSH did not see a rise in respiratory-related visits, there was a clear increase in individuals seeking support for behavioral health and substance use concerns. Wraalstad encouraged anyone experiencing anxiety or feeling overwhelmed to reach out to available resources, including First Call for Help, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, and Grand Portage Human Services.

Another major discussion topic was NSH’s application to the Rural Health Transformation Fund. Rural health providers are facing growing financial pressures due to federal policy changes, and the fund was established to help offset some of these impacts. NSH has requested 1.4 million dollars to strengthen its IT infrastructure and support systems essential for modern care- such as electronic health records, telehealth services, virtual hospitalists, virtual emergency department support, and expanded virtual behavioral health options. Wraalstad emphasized that strong IT platforms are critical for maintaining and enhancing these services.
