Compassionate Care

Nursing at North Shore Health covers the spectrum of care areas: home-care, long-term care setting, and acute-care settings.  Nursing supports the mission, vision, and values of North Shore Health through a competency based professional practice model and through the support of professional development.

Nursing Practice Model

Nursing employs a competency-based orientation and practice model.  We combine the competency framework of the QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) Institute with the Human Caring model of nursing theorist Jean Watson.

The competency areas, as defined by QSEN are:

  • Person-centered (patient-centered) Care
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Evidence-based Practice
  • Quality Improvement
  • Safety
  • Informatics

The QSEN competencies provide the criteria for on-going development and evaluation of nursing and nursing care.

The Watson model of Human Caring guides the nurse-patient/resident interaction of nursing practice at North Shore Health.

Human caring, or Caring Science, embraces the person as a whole and across the spectrum of care.  It allows for modes of care and caring practices that compliment traditional western health care practices.  A nurse who incorporates Human Caring theory, a Caritas Nurse, brings forward 10 different processes as part of caring.   1. Embrace (Loving-Kindness)
    Sustaining humanistic-altruistic values by practice of loving-kindness, compassion and equanimity with self/others.
  2. Inspire (Faith-Hope)
    Being authentically present, enabling faith/hope/belief system, honoring subjective inner, life-world of self/others.
  3. Trust (Transpersonal)
    Being sensitive to self and others by cultivating own spiritual practices; beyond ego-self to transpersonal presence.
  4. Nurture (Relationship)
    Developing and sustaining loving, trusting-caring relationships.
  5. Forgive (All)
    Allowing for expression of positive and negative feelings-authentically listening to another person’s story.
  6. Deepen (Creative Self)
    Creatively problem-solving-‘solution-seeking’ through caring process; full use of self and artistry of caring-healing practices via use of all ways of knowing/being/doing/becoming.
  7. Balance (Learning)
    Engaging in transpersonal teaching and learning within context of caring relationship; staying within other’s frame of reference-shift toward coaching model for expanded health/wellness.
  8. Co-create (Caritas Field)
    Creating a healing environment at all levels; subtle environment for energetic authentic caring presence.
  9. Minister (Humanity)
    Reverentially assisting with basic needs as sacred acts, touching mindbodyspirit of spirit of others; sustaining human dignity.
  10. Open (Infinity)
    Opening to spiritual, mystery, unknowns-allowing for miracles.

Nursing Professional Development

Nursing is a profession that values continual learning and development.  Professional development begins at hire and continues through a person’s career at North Shore Health.

Nursing Residency Program

A nursing residency program is the basis for orientation of a newly hired nurse at North Shore Health.  The program adapts to the experience level of the individual nurse.  The residency program can be up to six months in length.

Professional Development

Professional development, continuing education, professional certifications are all valued for the quality that is brought to resident care.  Some of the different ways that North Shore Health supports professional development is through:

  • Paid training for mandatory courses and certifications
  • Continuing education funds
  • Scholarships for approved academic and training programs
